Giovanni Motta

“You are the eternal child, viewing everything in astonishment, as if for the first time.”
(Giovanni Pascoli, Il fanciullino)

Giovanni Motta was born in Verona in 1971.
After his accounting studies, he began working in the world of communication as a creative and advertising artist collaborating, among others, with Emanuele Pirella in Milan. His artist nature had already manifested itself by child: at 9 he won a drawing competition organized by the FAO. At the same time he is interested in figurative and contemporary art with a particular interest in the world of Japanese <> and <>. He began his artistic journey by painting scenes of life extrapolated from his travels around the world with hyperrealist technique: Tokyo, Los Angeles, New York, London, are essential stages for his research on the theme that will become the leitmotif of his work: the inner child . This will lead him to explore culture while also using new technologies, such as modeling and 3D printing. He began exhibiting in 2000 with solo and group exhibitions in Italy and abroad.

He has participated in prizes for which he was a finalist, such as the Arte Laguna Prize (Venice 2016), the Aletti Award (2009) and the Arte Prize (Cairo Editore, 2004).
Together with the Galleria Forni he has participated in numerous contemporary art fairs, Art Verona, St-Art Strasbourg, Art Helsinki and Roma Contemporary. In September 2020 he exhibited in Switzerland with the personal “Thanks” on the theme of cartoons. He started working full-time in art from the beginning of 2020, making him an emerging artist at 49. Recently he has made contacts with art galleries and collectors from Colombia, Venezuela, the Philippines, Egypt, China, Switzerland, Belgium.

He approaches Crypto Art, a new artistic movement where everything is still to be built and where it is possible to rewrite the history of art, and in November 2020 he decides to publish his first crypto work on the portal SuperRare.co: “Forgetting”, Edition 1/1.
After only two months (January 2021) he is ranked #1 in the world by the most important Crypto Art Gallery: SuperRare.co.

The year 2021 opens with a solo exhibition in Shanghai at Gallery Func (“GAME OVER Play again” 24 April to 6 June 2021).
Two collective exhibitions, Bogota and Bamberg, are also planned this year.
He is one of the artists in the stable of Bosa ceramics, Italian excellence in the world.

“I’am interested in retrieving lost emotional states, which are linked to past events. A past event may be a brief life experience or a simple action, which may in itself be as insignificant as a certain smell entering you nose, seeing a small detail, recognising a colour or tasting a certain flavour. I explore states of mind and the story which accompanies them. The emotions generated by a certain memory have a high intensity and are experienced in one place and at a particular moment of one’s life. The place gives shape to the emotional state and helps create a complete idea of the memory. The person + the place + the emotional state = the memory. The memory becomes concrete, like an object. I listen, I observe, I also make experiences of other human beings my own. The period of life which I focus on is childhood, from around 7 to 12 years old. This research is crystallised through the creation of sculptures, which I define as monsters, and pictorial works. Monsters are the image of these emotive states, they are the key to their retrieval. A monster is a wonder, an extraordinary thing, as extraordinary as living an emotion. Studying memories and emotions has brought me in touch with the internal child. A child is the greatest symbol of memory. It exists inside of us, but its shape cannot be retrieved. I analyse the links between similar emotional states and try to convey the result in a particular form. I sculpt and paint. I use 3D printing, clay modelling and stratified resins. I paint with acrylics on canvas and look for perfection when applying colour. I complete my works with details, applied with serigraphy.”
